Not even a day goes by and WordPress announces Akismet, their centralized anti-comment-spam solution. Its free for the amateur blogger to use, but first you need a WordPress.com account. This can be hard to come by and if you aren’t thinking everything through the hints they throw at you on the Akismet website will fly right over your head.
If you need a WordPress.com account what you need to do is download and install Flock; run Flock and on the getting started page is a link to get your own blog. Click that (even if you have your own blog already) and you’ll be presented with several choices, WordPress being one of them. Choose that link and you’ll be prompted for some info to create your account. Log in and on the upper right corner of your admin panel is a “My Account” link. Go there and you’ll be presented with your API key. Copy that key down.
Now go install Akismet on your own blog and once it is enabled you’ll be prompted for your key. Put that in and you should be all set to go.
Time to see how long before some spam slips through Akismet 😀
[Edit: I knew i was forgetting something…links to Akismet would be nice!]
